Spectacular nose - fresh Granny Smith apples and unripe honey melon with a twist of fresh seawater and bitter grapefruit. But there’s a depth and mineral intensity to the nose that separates this wine from the “bulk straight forward fruity wines”. Maybe it’s terroir - maybe it’s “sur lie”? The taste is fresh, zingy and a little savory but everything just “sits right” - no alcohol spikes, tons of freshness, depth and complexity - all seamlessly balanced out with a lovely tart and bitter acidity on the finish.

2010 (detroit): This leads with a particularly piercing, icy chime of stone—minty and translucent. That's the sort of element I might expect to catabolize in two years, and not appear without precedent. The rest of the drinking experience is properly curved, transparently flavored, and cured. Beds of saltmarsh brulée, thriving coastal grasses, and oyster-shell sugars flap forwardly aloft, weightless. The dramatic contest here consists of illuminated breeziness meeting fallen nut fats. Botanical rumors mock the upper registers, consisting of apricot, pome, cardamom, piñon, green lemon blossom, tea buds, and flooded gravel. Aspirated dryness. Elegant contours. Mannered emotional austerity. More Champagne should taste like this.

White pepper, gunflint, crushed oyster shell, with oodles of lemon and kiwifruit. Expressive and open with lots of character and depth. Just what you want with aspargus and mayonaisse.

Wow, this has aged wonderfully, or this was just an exceptional bottle - I don't know. Deep and nutty on the nose but still so alive with lemon peel and pineapple nectar, chalk dust, and dried yellow flowers. The palate has this waxy, deep, aged vibe but stays pristine and clear throughout with a mineral-infused intensity that I love. Lemon, orange, pineapple, the fruit blends so well with this dense honey, pickled ginger, even some green olive notes. Finishes rich with lots of oceanic tones. So glad I held onto this one for so long.

Millésime 2013 et non 2014.
Un muscadet dans un style mûr se rapprochant un peu du chardonnay
Du volume, de la longueur, un vin de gastronomie.
Manue juste d’un peu de complexité pour passer le niveau supérieur

Given that I live less than a mile from the ocean, I really ought to drink more Muscadet, especially considering how much I’ve cellared over the years (a lot). And with that in mind and a chance encounter with some beautiful looking halibut cheeks at the fish market, I pulled a bottle of Luneau-Papin 2002 L d’Or from the wine fridge. And I’ll be goddamned, this is a beauty! Forsythia yellow/just hinting at gold robe. Upon opening the nose is pretty, dynamic, and pure—no, is-it-corked-or-old-Loire here, thank you very much. Aromas of wet stone, just barely ripe orchard fruit, and preserved lemon on the nose, with just a whisper of petrol, but more sweet summer lawn clipping and lawn mower gas than Formula 1. The palate shows nervous tension and is just uncoiling with salted pear, bits of iodine and Meyer lemon flavors vying with notes of quinine and bee pollen. This is ripe and nearly round (for Muscadet) but there’s a satisfying cut and precision that moderates the ripeness, as if gaveling the yellow fruit to order. Splendid with pan-roasted halibut cheeks with brown butter and capers, and carrot purée with honey, and Cara Cara juice, as well a charred broccolini with lemon and anchovy. But if you have a chicken needing roasting this will perform with élan at the very least. (Maybe highlight the bird with a piquant salsa verde.) Fine, fine bottle purchased as a young(er) wine professional quite a few years ago. Thanks David Lillie and perhaps Lyle Fass(?). Age your Muscadet, friends!

Pale lemon-green colour. Light nose with green apples, lemon, wet stone and sea salt. Medium (-) taste of green apples, lemon wet stone and sea salt. Medium long and dry finish. High acidity. Light body. A very good Muscadet Sur Lie that is still young. Needed 15 min to open. Drink now or over the next five years. Goes well with fish or shellfish.

A pale lemon colour with fresh aromas of seashell, mineral, green apple, and savoury elements. The palate entry is linear and focused, with piercing acidity that resonates throughout the wine. Plenty of apple and sherbet apple flavours with a leesy underbelly. It is reminiscent of biting into a fresh apple studied with a couple of cloves. A good but not top-tier Muscadet, it is fun and enjoyable.

A pale lemon colour suggests youth. Aromas of minerals, apples, ozone and sea shells; the freshness is akin to a wind-swept environment. The palate carries forward the apple freshness with a piercing acidity along its narrow frame. Vibrant with a lemon edge, lees softly rub the back palate, adding complexity and texture. The mid-palate is ripe with Galia melon, chamomile, fennel fronds, seashells, and salted lemon. You can almost feel the coldness of the steel-ly acid.
Well-structured, balanced this is invigorating Muscadet and extremely enjoyable.
Soils: Granite and gneiss soils,

—Holy crap, this wine is good.
—It has a deeply involving bouquet that weaves together sensations comparable to ripe, sweet lemons, chervil, and sinews of lees, stretched and pliant. Chipped stone; rich vat perfume.
—If the first things I notice aren’t the usual Muscadet cliches—surf, seaweed, gulls crying—then it’s only because this wine is beginning its long, slow convergence on aesthetics more commonly known as Burgundian. These include marine sensations too, but they are more antique. The sounds of crashing waves are stilled under the surface.
—The finish tuned and resonant, tantamount to an invitation to suck teeth dry. Salt as hard as granite resolves in a scatter of spring herbs, sour pine, cherries, green apples seared in butter, milled steel; oyster liquor and alto saxophone.

—As I sit here, the room is 84° F and the wine is 77°. I’d probably rather serve it at 65° or 70°, but in the spirit of renaissance larping, it’s all good. (I’m too mean to buy a new fridge. The one I have now is defrosting.)
—The bottle was opened yesterday.
—I think I know where all the Chardonnay drinkers went.
—Mouth coating brass, exaggerated by the temps, but the material is there in the drink to begin with. Precise aromatic arcs of green apple inspire glancing memories of a warm Mosel vintage as it peaks. Of course its character is governed significantly by marine sensations.
—Oysters considering Burgundy.

Muscadet for the Cellar
—I assume wine scribbling culture will forever be ideologically twain. You either take it for granted that cru Muscadet is a preeminent candidate for keeping in a cellar, or you think the idea might be crackpot, perhaps to be lumped with this trendy glorification of biological spoilage, or white grapes fermented on their skins in clay pots.
—2016 Clos des Allées is a subversive invitation to your common sense. It is not possible to drink it and not come away better informed about what matters. It’s a wrecking ball to rampant, entrenched, and arbitrarily fossilized misinformation.
—What’s more, at this temperature, it should nuke any exclusionary reddist taste commitments (whether open or secret). I am directing (my local shop) to keep a deep backstock of 2016 as a hedge against inflation.
